Chignecto National Wildlife Area, Nova Scotia - Routine Maintenance of High Voltage Transmission Lines L5548 and L6551

Nova Scotia Power Incorporated is proposing to undertake routine maintenance actions and repairs to existing electricity transmission infrastructure located within the boundaries of the Chignecto National Wildlife Area over a five year period.

The Chignecto National Wildlife Area is administered under the Wildlife Area Regulations of the Canada Wildlife Act. The National Wildlife Area contains two high-voltage electricity transmission lines operated by Nova Scotia Power Incorporated, within its boundaries. Both transmission lines, and associated Right of Way corridors, pre-date establishment of the National Wildlife Area.

The scope of this project includes maintenance, repairs or replacement of steel and wooden poles, cross-arm and framing replacement, conductor and insulator replacement, log-anchor repair and guy wire replacement. These maintenance activities are performed as equipment wears out or is due for scheduled replacement, and may be carried out with the use of an excavator, crane, bucket truck, nodwell, ATV, and half-tonne truck. All proposed activities will be completed during periods when site conditions are suitable for travel within the Right of Way (ie dry ground conditions or frozen ground conditions). All activities will occur outside of the breeding periods for migratory birds, to avoid disturbance to all species which reside inside the National Wildlife Area. All necessary measures to address potential siltation will be employed, including use of silt fences. All exposed surfaces will be covered with hay mulch at the completion of construction, and will be seeded with native grass species in the spring.
