Rosewall Creek Research Hatchery - Hatchery Retrofit - Circular Fiberglass Tub Farm Installation

As part of the PSSI and associated Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP) initiatives, the Rosewall Creek Research Hatchery (Rosewall Hatchery) was selected to receive funding to expand the aquaculture capacity on-site to meet specific conservation enhancement targets for salmonid populations. To facilitate the required program expansion, the overall rearing capacity of the hatchery must be expanded.

This project will take part in two phases and is occurring within a previously developed area. Phase 1 includes the removal of the existing material total footprint for one tub modules of 1,800 m2 and the grading of the area. The intent of Phase 1 is to bring the already developed area to a suitable grade for the next phase. Phase 2 of the project includes the construction and installation of underground utility lines for the module (water supply, drain lines, air lines, electrical conduits), the installation of rearing tubs, the adjustment of the existing fence, and the levelling of the final area of 1,525 m2 around the tubs' location.

Phase 1: Site preparation of previously developed area (1,800 m2)
o    Stripping or organic soils and materials (footprint 1,800 m2); some material will be stockpiled onsite. The remaining material will be disposed of at an appropriate facility.
o    Site grading: Suitable granular fill per geotechnical recommendations will need to be imported to site to achieve the desired site grading. Fill depths will range from 0.5 m to 1.5 m throughout the 1,800 m2 impact area.
 
Phase 2: Construction
o    Installation of Underground Services (footprint 110 m2):
o    The underground services consist of water supply line, water drain, electrical conduits
o    Installation of Fiberglass Rearing Tubs (138 m2)
o    Installation of approximately 14 circular fibreglass rearing tubs for one of the two modules of various sizes to achieve a 1.06m working height. 
o    The tub farm module will consist of:
·    Six 1.84 m diameter tubs with a depth of 0.91 m placed on the ground surface;
·    Six 3.66 m diameter tubs with a depth of 1.22 m buried to a depth of 0.15 m below the ground surface;
·    Two 6.10 m diameter tubs with a depth of 1.52 m buried to a depth of 0.46 m below the ground surface;
·    All tubs will be tied directly to underground utilities noted above.
o    Levelling the final area where the new tub modules are located with a 150 mm thick gravel pad (1,525 m2).

No tree or vegetation removal will be required for the above works. The proposed work is to take place on already developed land. Soil and materials to be removed from site will be disposed of at an accredited facility and will be tested prior to removal. Erosion and sediment control measures, a Spill Prevention and Plan, and a Waste Management Plan will be developed and in place prior to construction occurring. All equipment and crews will arrive on site via public road.
