Wildfire Risk Reduction at Fort Walsh National Historic Site

The objective of this project is to reduce the risk of wildfire at Fort Walsh National Historic Site (NHS) by lowering potential wildfire intensity and rates of spread. The absence of fire and the maturity of the forest around the fort site has resulted in the accumulation of ladder fuels, old or dying mature trees and downed woody material. Strategic fuel reduction will reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire impacting public safety, visitor experience, and cultural values at the site. Fuel reduction efforts to reduce this risk have been on-going at Fort Walsh since 2008. The areas proposed for treatment in the current 2023-2026 Fire Risk Reduction Plan will cover 26.2 ha over 3 years and have been prioritized according to fuels present and proximity to assets/cultural resources. Proposed work will reduce conifer aerial fuels to create breaks in canopy without discriminating towards a single age class and reduce ladder fuels and snags. On-going site maintenance will occur along the Battle Creek Fuel Break and throughout the previously thinned areas at Fort Walsh.
