Canadian Coast Guard Amhersburg Base Wharf Repair Project

The Canadian Coast Guard Amherstburg Base is located at 370 Dalhousie Street in Amherstburg, Ontario. The base is situated on the east shore of the Amherstburg Channel (Detroit River), east of Boblo Island, approximately 32 kilometres southwest of the City of Windsor. The facility, managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, is comprised of an administration and warehouse building, a search and rescue office and crew residence, a commissionaire's office, a helicopter pad, a fuel delivery system, a private boat ramp, and various small storage and mechanical equipment buildings. Steel sheet pile walls make up the wharf structure to the west of these buildings. Wharf infrastructure is identified as being in fair to poor condition and at or near the end of its useful life.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Real Property Central and Arctic Region, Engineering and Technical Support is proposing to undertake the reconstruction and repair of deteriorated wharf infrastructure to extend the service life of the wharf by an estimated 15 years. The scope of work includes:

  • Partial and full depth repair of concrete coping on top of steel sheet piling along wharf wall;
  • Removal of steel ladders welded to inpan of steel sheet piling along wharf. Repair, modification, and reinstatement of steel ladders to meet current occupational health and safety regulations;
  • Replacement of select fenders and fender anchorage along wharf wall that is missing or damaged;
  • Repainting of mooring devices and steel wheel guard along wharf wall;
  • Demolition and reconstruction of retaining wall along east property line that is leaning;
  • Replacement of two brick catch basins on site with precast concrete catch basins;
  • Replacement of existing concrete stairs and ramp to administration office building;
  • Removal and replacement of damaged gabion basket retaining wall on either side of boat launch ramp;
  • Removal and replacement of damaged and submerged gabion basket west of boat launch ramp with new gabion basket that is approximately 2 metres taller;
  • Removal and replacement of asphalt pavement and subbase across the entire property;
  • Repainting of parking spaces and helicopter pad;
