Xeni Gwet'in Tanakut Waterline Extension

The subject property is located along Konni Lake in the Nemiah Valley, BC. The proposed construction includes the extension of a water supply pipe system for 8.2 km from Lohibhee IR3 to Tanakut IR4. This supply system would provide water for the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation and will tie into the existing watermain.

The watermain will extend along Nemiah Valley Road from IR3 until 2.5km east of Konni Lake within IR4. Construction will involve open trenching for the majority of the length, with a single section of directional drilling proposed beneath an unnamed tributary at the northeast end of Konni Lake ("Inlet Creek") for approximately 60m.

The project also includes instalment of air/vacuum release valves, gate valves, standpipes, thrust blocks, and service connections along the length of the water main. Details for each feature are provided on. Existing culverts will be removed as required for installation of the watermain and replaced following completion of construction in the area. If the tributaries are flowing, no work around watercourses will be completed until the flow ceases.

Plans call for the project to take 4 months to complete, with the directional drilling portion taking approximately four days, and open trench work adjacent to the wetland spanning about one week. The timeline for crossing of the tributaries/culverts (in the dry) is estimated at one day per culvert.

Notice of Determination

Vancouver, BC – 2023-02-22 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the Xeni Gwet'in Tanakut Waterline Extension project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, the Indigenous Services Canada may provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
