Demolition of Structures and Removal of Debris - Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area

Environment and Climate Change Canada-Canadian Wildlife Services (ECCC-CWS) is proposing to undertake the demolition of several structures and collection of associated debris at vacant lots along the shore of the Long Point harbour within the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, located in Milford, Ontario. Some of these lots have debris and old equipment, and some lots have buildings and structures from past site use. On seven of the lots, several of the structures pose a public health and safety hazard as they have fallen into disrepair and  will be demolished using excavators and other heavy machinery.  Demolished materials are to be safely transported offsite and effectively disposed of with the long-term objective of restoring the site to its natural state to benefit native wildlife including species at risk that use these valuable riparian areas.

The proposed work will commence and be completed in Winter 2024, when disturbance to migratory birds and other wildlife will be minimal. Exposed soil and excavated material will be re-graded, stabilized and/or re-seeded using appropriate native plants, soils, seed mix and seed application to benefit wildlife including species at risk. Minimal work will take place on or near the high-level watermark. Sediment and erosion control will be used where necessary.
