LSFN Burial Site Mapping

A rockfill berm consists of a windrow of rock placed parallel to the existing shoreline and acts as a wave break. The height of the berm at
each site will vary depending on the site specific hydraulics analysis and flood protection levels (FPL). The remediation works completed at
each burial site will be implemented with minimal disturbance to the existing banks and shorelines. It is common design practice to sub-cut
the riprap into the bank above the Winter Lake Level to offset the additional weight of the riprap and to minimize fish habitat infilling, however
additional excavation of the exposed bank faces is not desired since these are burial sites. Therefore, the riprap will be underlaid with
geotextile and placed directly on the existing bank slope. The utilized riprap material will be quarried granite bedrock and be at least 0.5 m in
diameter, although some areas may require larger based on the geometry of the shoreline. Site specific berm construction specifications are
detailed below:
- Frenchman's Head: Approximately 1,535 cubic meters of riprap material will be placed in a berm design to protect all 150 m of shoreline.
The berm will have finished slopes of 2H:1V extending into Lost Lake approximately 23-25 m beyond the OHWM and will slope inland at
1H:1V with a top width of 2 m (EL. 358.56 m) and a height of approximately 1.65 m.
- Council House: Approximately 3,525 cubic meters of riprap material will be placed in a berm design to protect all 260 m of shoreline. The
berm will have finished slopes of 2H:1V extending into Lost Lake approximately 25-27 m beyond the OHWM and will slope inland at 1H:1V
with a top width of 2 m (EL. 358.91 m) and a height of approximately 2 m.
- Canoe River: Approximately 2,195 cubic meters of riprap material will be placed in a berm design to protect all 200 m of shoreline. The
berm will have finished slopes of 2H:1V extending into Lac Seul approximately 20-25 m and will slope inland at 1H:1V with a top width of 2
m (EL. 358.24 m) and a height of approximately 1.33 m.
- Whitefish Bay: Approximately 3,815 cubic meters of riprap material will be placed in a berm design to protect all 190 m of shoreline. The
berm will have finished slopes of 2H:1V extending into Lac Seul approximately 27-37 m beyond the OHWM and will slope inland at 1H:1V
with a top width of 2 m (EL. 359.24 m) and a height of approximately 2.33 m.

Geotextile fabric will be placed beneath the entire footprint of the riprap protection at each of the burial sites. The geotextile fabric will act as
a separator between the subgrade soils and riprap, and to minimize the risk of sand being undermined through the rock from erosion
processes. Site access to Frenchman's Head and Whitefish Bay will be via land and pre-established pathways, while access to Council
House, Canoe River and St. Mary's sites will be via existing and constructed winter ice roads.
Work will be performed during winter months when the ground and lakes are frozen so there will be little risk of erosion or sediment release.
It is anticipated that the ice will extend to the lake bottom within the extent of the project footprint such that the work will be completed in dry
conditions. All work will be performed from the ice surface, eliminating any top of bank disturbance. Any sediment, sand, or debris
introduced to the ice surface shall be removed upon project completion and prior to spring thaw. Following construction, it is anticipated that
trees and vegetation will be planted to restore the top of slope area or any areas of disturbance to the natural state of each site (i.e., access
roads). Additionally, it is common practice to plant live stake willow cuttings amongst the riprap which would eventually grow to provide
vegetation over the riprap material.
