Covehead DFO-SCH Wharf Upgrades

In late September 2022, Covehead SCH was severely damaged by post tropical storm Fiona. Large sections of the deck were removed from their moorings which rendered most of the wharf unusable until minor repairs were undertaken. The proposed project consists of the reconstruction of existing wharf structures to raise the grade (by approximately 1.0m-1.2m) to combat rising water elevations and future storm events. The proposed new structures are to follow the same alignment as the existing.

The timber wharf along the north edge of the property (structure 603) will be removed and reconstructed. The existing structures (pressure treated timber piling, pile caps, deck, wheel guard, etc.) will be removed and disposed of. The new structure will be comprised of Steel Sheet Piling (SSP) complete with tie rods and reinforced concrete anchor blocks. Additionally, armourstone shoreline protection on the north side of the structure will be installed. The finish surface is anticipated to be asphalt for approximately 30 m with the last 10 m, to the west, to be reinforced concrete slab on grade.

The existing SSP structure with a reinforced concrete deck in the North-South direction (structure 405) will have the existing pressure treated infrastructure and existing backfill materials removed. A cope wall will then be installed in order to elevate the deck, complete with a steel tie-rod and anchor block assembly with a reinforced concrete slab deck on grade. The existing timber wharf (structure 403), its associated buried pressure treated timber infrastructure and existing backfill materials as well as the associated pressure treated retaining walls adjacent to the slipway, structure 501, will be removed and reconstructed. The new structures will be constructed using SSP, complete with tie rods and reinforced concrete anchor blocks and capped with reinforced concrete slabs on grade.
