Breakwater Reconstruction at Skinners Cove Small Craft Harbour, Pictou County, NS

The Small Craft Harbours Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake a breakwater reconstruction project at Skinners Cove Harbour, located in the area of Melville near River John in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The reconstruction will consist of the use of heavy equipment such as excavators and haul trucks working from the existing breakwater and cribwork wharf structure as it is being reconstructed.

The existing timber crib wharf forming the western side of the east breakwater structure will be demolished and removed. A new timber crib wharf will be constructed in approximately the same footprint with a reinforced concrete slab deck at an elevation of +3.5 meters above chart datum. The new structure will be approximately 47.15 m long and 4.6 m wide, and mooring cleats, ladders and an ice shield will be installed on the northern side. The breakwater structure will be reshaped and extended further into the waterbody, increasing the current footprint by 519 m2. Geotextile will be installed over a core stone base and then overlaid with filter stone and armour stone to a top elevation of +5.5 m. The gravel approach will be raised and reshaped to tie into the new armour stone breakwater. Wherever possible, stone removed during the initial stages of the work will be reinstated on the new structure.
