Demolition of Degaussing Range Wharf - Canadian Forces Base, Halifax

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project to remove the existing wharf and causeway located at the degaussing range down to the existing seabed. The wharf is in poor condition due to the large amount of deterioration and has reached the end of its useful life.

The removal will involve creosoted timbers as well as non-creosote pressure treated timbers, stone ballast with no fine material, concrete causeway deck, armor stone and stone infill. The wharf is comprised of timber crib work with stone ballast transitioning to an earth filled causeway that is topped with a concrete slab. Water flows through the existing crib work. The causeway is protected from erosion by the placement of armor stone on its perimeter. The waste generated from the project will include creosoted timbers, non-creosoted timbers and stone ballast, which will be disposed at licensed facilities located within the region according to applicable to provincial and municipal environmental/ disposal requirements. The armor stone from deconstruction will be relocated to the existing shoreline to provide erosion protection to the area where the causeway will be removed as well as providing additional erosion protection to the southwest corner of the fenced perimeter. The project is scheduled to occur in Spring 2022 or fall 2022.
