Regional Assessment of the Montney Formation
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has received a request from Duncan's First Nation for a regional assessment of the Montney Formation, located in northwestern Alberta. The proposed regional assessment would aim to gather information on potential cumulative impacts of oil and gas activities and related development of the Montney Formation and adjoining hydrocarbon basin on the rights and practices of Duncan's First Nation and other Indigenous groups in the region.

August 14, 2025 — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has decided that a regional assessment of the Montney Formation is not warranted under the Impact Assessment Act. The reasons for the decision are provided in the Minister's Response.
